Arts Centre BUDA in Kortrijk is a platform for contemporary art festivals, an art house cinema, and runs one of the largest workspaces for performing arts in Belgium. BUDA has created an artistic context centered on artistic creation.
Approximately 150 artists (40 to 50 companies) come to Kortrijk to work on new projects every year, focused on artistic research, creation and/or presentation. BUDA offers time and space, customized support (logistic, technical, feedback), a network of artistic and professional contacts, and the possibility of an informal presentation for a test audience.
Arts Centre BUDA’s leases, as necessary, five rehearsal studios for performing arts (accessible 24/7) in Budatoren, two theatre venues to finalize productions, three cinema screening rooms in Budascoop, a 3,000 m2 space for New Media in BudaFabriek, as well as two residential houses in the city centre (offering 15 rooms in total) for overnight stays.
Arts Centre BUDA receives approximately 500 applications for residencies annually, with about 10% being accepted. Age, medium, nationality or experience of the artist are not decisive criteria for selection for a residency, but history reveals that ‘BUDA artists’ often operate on the borderlines of theatre, dance, performance, video, architecture and other media.
The needs of the artist or the project are the central drive for projects at BUDA. There are no standard frames concerning the duration of the residency, input by BUDA, outcome, or presentation.
